Zoonoses are defined as damage to human health and/or quality of life caused by contact with (other) toxic or edible vertebrates or invertebrates.
From a health perspective, there is a lot of interest from the veterinary community, as the activities surrounding surveillance and control of zoonoses in animals and food uses a lot of local health service time and resources. One critical point is the lack of information on the impact these diseases have on human health, particularly due to the difficulties in notification and collection of quantitative data.
In collaboration with Soc. Servizi Telematici s.r.l, which manages the PEDIANET database and collects information on activities of family paediatricians, we want to collect quantitative data on the main zoonoses which manifest in the pediatric age group (particularly those with vector, food and parasitic transmission). This information network is particularly well developed in the Veneto region.
The main aim is to aquire quantitative data on the presence and diagnostic frequency of the main zoonoses in in the Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trento and Bolzano area paediatric populations.
The objectives are:
Gastrointestinal infections (ICD9 003-009), particularly Salmonella, E.Coli (anche ICD9 41.4), Campylobacter, Norovirus, Giardia, Cryptosporidium
Vector transmitted diseases (arthropods and mosquitos): leishmaniasis (ICD9 085), rickettsial fever (ICD9 082-083) tick bite fever (ICD9 063), viral encefalitis trasmitted by mosquitos (west nile, EEE, JEE, VEE,… ICD9 062), tularemia (ICD9 021), Lyme disease (ICD9 88.81) other arthropod borne diseases (ICD9 88)
Other food borne diseases: listeriosis (ICD9 027), brucellosis (ICD9 023), toxoplasmosis (ICD9 130), infantile botulism (ICD9 005.1)
Parassitic diseases: Tenia (ICD9 123), Miasi (ICD9 134), larva migrans (ICD9 128), Dermatophytosis (ICD9 110), Dipylidium (ICD9 123.8)
Other zoonoses: leptospirosis (ICD9 100), cat scratch disease (ICD9 078.3), bartonellosis (ICD9 088)
From the data analysis we will obtain estimates of the incidence of the above mentioned zoonoses in the pediatric population of the Veneto area.
This information will be published as specific reports and scientific publications.
The data will be considered in the evaluation of needs for health intervention at the regional level.
With the information created specific information can be created for the various partners in the national health system:
